Why Infant Sign Language?
Infant Sign Language is a way for parents, caregivers and loved ones to communicate with babies and toddlers before they are able to speak orally. Sign Language uses gross motor skills, whereas oral communication uses fine motor skills. Using Sign Language with babies and toddlers can not only ease frustration trying to figure out what your child wants or needs, but it can also help to develop his or her cognitive abilities. Associating a sign—a word—with an object, emotion, description or concept will help your child to understand that those objects, emotions, etc. have words, and using those words will help to communicate. It is a building block on the road to speaking, reading, and being a life-long learner. Studies have also shown that children who signed as babies and toddlers had higher IQs than those who did not. In addition to all this, signing with your baby or toddler can provide hours of fun and learning to share with your child!
